Book before you go. The reservation requirement is new, regulars are split on it — one called it their least favorite change — and turning up unannounced is now the way to be disappointed. What you are booking is a set of small pretend-play rooms rather than a climbing frame: a restaurant kitchen, an office, a dress-up corner, a laundry, a doll's house, blocks.

The clever touch comes at the end. Each child gets a wooden dollar to hand in for a snack on the way out, which turns the hardest part of the visit into a transaction rather than an argument. It suits toddlers to about six, and a parent who assumed their twenty-two-month-old was too young found the opposite. Siblings come in free with a paid child and regulars buy the five-day pass. Parties are properly private but priced around eighteen guests, which a parent of a two-year-old noted is rather more friends than a two-year-old has.
