A birthday in and around Portland can be planned around one thing to do. Children skate at Oaks Park and at Winterhawks in Beaverton, dig through the indoor sandbox at DiG PDX, and climb with staff belayers at Stoneworks and at Source in Vancouver, Washington. Ultrazone in Milwaukie pairs laser tag with a party room, and KingPins mixes an arcade with bowling. For children who would rather roam than take turns, Funtastic Playtorium at Clackamas Town Center and Liggle Land in Tigard are built around big play structures. The food rules differ: DiG and Ultrazone let you bring your own, Liggle Land lets in only a cake, and Winterhawks turns away outside cake altogether.

Pitch this at a child who wants to skate, because that is what the party actually is: rink admission, skate rental and a reserved table in the rink café, with a shout-out over the loudspeaker. The rides are a separate and seasonal business here, while the rink runs all year. The guest ceiling is an occupancy limit rather than a guideline, so it does not bend.
The parents get the party off here: guests describe sitting down to talk while the children dig, with the whole floor open enough to watch from a chair. The birthday child has to be six or under, though guests can be any age. The regular slots are Saturdays and a Friday evening, weekdays go by inquiry, and there are no Sunday parties. Bring your own food; piñatas, glitter and confetti stay at home.
Treat the cheapest tier as skating and nothing more: it carries no food and no room. The rink allows no outside pizza, cake or drinks either, so a birthday cake means moving up to a tier that includes one, along with the party room for 45 minutes. Parties run only inside the weekend public skate sessions, which puts your group on the ice with everyone else who came to skate.
Budget past the headline figure: a 20% service charge lands on the whole bill, dessert is the one food you may carry in, and what you get is a reserved table out on the floor rather than a room of your own. The cheapest version is the arcade one midweek — pizza, unlimited soft drinks and game credit for every child, with a party team working your table.

The birthday show runs in English, Spanish and American Sign Language, which is worth raising when you book. Around it the headline package is bare: games, soft drinks and a decorated table out on the floor, with pizza and a party host left to the per-child tiers. Children can keep playing once the two hours are up, though on weekends the table has to be cleared at that point.
The instruction is built for a child who likes an audience: the birthday climber helps demonstrate, gets first pick of the walls and makes the first ascent while everyone sings. The small room upstairs is yours for an hour after a morning climb or before an evening one, and the gym supplies no food or decorations, so bring both, then clean up yourself or pay the fee. Bookings go by phone.
Several reviewers who came here for birthdays describe what other reviewers do: a smell at the door, sticky floors and dirty play structures, and one says they would have left had it not been a party. The room is yours for the session while the playground stays open to the public, and one visitor counted three parties running at once. A cake or cupcakes are the only food you may bring in.
Only the room runs to a clock here. It is booked for a set slot, and every child can play before and after it for as long as they like. On Sundays the whole playground can be hired instead, first thing or in the evening. Holidays are charged at the weekend rate, going by the local school district's calendar.
There is no party room here and no party corner either: you climb in the public gym and a folding table appears for the cake if you ask for one. Two staff belayers work the ropes, so no parent is left holding a rope they do not understand. One guest at a children's party here was asked to keep the cheering down, which tells you whose floor it still is.
The three laser-tag games in the package are played in the shared arena, alongside whoever else has come to play. Arrive on time, because the venue warns that late arrivals can mean rushed or missed games. When a couple of boys bothered a party of eleven-year-old girls, one parent says staff went straight into the arena to deal with it. No food is provided, and outside food is welcome.
