Two afternoons a week, staff take charge of the play floor and hand the parents an hour back. The supervised sessions include a snack and they are the thing that sets this apart from the other play cafes in the Northland - one mother of a two- and a five-year-old says they are the reason she comes back almost weekly, and that it is rare to find a single room that works for both of hers. The rest of the week it runs as an ordinary open-play morning with a serious coffee bar attached: Messenger espresso, boba, smoothies, and hot food rather than a vending machine. The play space is small on purpose, about 2,400 square feet of play kitchen, dress-up, climbing steps, short slides and puzzles that still have all their pieces. Parents can take the lounge with a full view of the floor, a cafe seat inside the play area itself, or a chair in the crawlers' section. What reviewers mention most, and most specifically, is how closely the floor is watched and how clean it stays.

The age boundary matters more here than at most places, because the venue enforces it. This is built for six months to six years, and an older brother or sister comes in free but is not permitted on the equipment at all. If your two children straddle that line, this is the wrong room. One regular's timing advice inverts the usual: come first thing if you want other children to play with, and take the early-afternoon slot if you want quiet.
